[By NBC-1TV H. J Yook]Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: VTSS), a leading provider of advanced IC solutions for Carrier and Enterprise networks, introduced Vitesse Service Aware Architecture (ViSAA™) technology, exclusively available in its portfolio of Carrier Ethernet Switch Engines. Integrated into the Ethernet switching layer silicon, ViSAA provides a scalable, hardware-based, efficient solution for enabling MEF CE 2.0 Carrier Ethernet service delivery in networking equipment, including Ethernet Access Devices (EAD) and Network Interface Devices (NID), used for small cell and macrocell backhaul in fiber and wireless networks.
Generic Ethernet switches are not service aware, meaning that OEMs are forced to augment traditional switching silicon with expensive external hardware components that could include FPGA, NPUs, or both. Supporting true carrier-class service delivery also often requires complex software additions that impact performance, and ultimately, carrier opex and revenue. Implementation is further challenged by the growing demand for Carrier Ethernet services for cloud access and mobile backhaul. Recent analyst reports show this market grew from $7 billion in 2007 to $30 billion in 2012, and forecast further growth to $48 billion by 2016. As future services ramp, it becomes imperative for carriers to dramatically increase efficiencies in their network equipment.
“ViSAA‘s hardware-based service aware technology overcomes the typical performance and implementation issues involved in delivering Carrier Ethernet services using an Ethernet switch,” said Uday Mudoi, product marketing director at Vitesse. “Vitesse’s approach radically simplifies how OEMs can enable carriers to establish, monitor and monetize Ethernet services for mobile access and cloud networks.”
