On Day 6 of this seven-day tournament, the W-73kg and the M-54kg world titles were up for grabs in Guadalajara’s Centro Acuatico CODE Metropolitano. [NBC-1TV 이석아 기자] 본사가 주관하고 있는 전국어린이태권도퀴즈대회 조직위원회에서 활동하고 있는 재미교포 이종철 특별위원이 8일(현지 시간) 미국 뉴저지 팰리세이즈파크(팰팍)시 미국 중간선거에 출마해 부시장(시의장 겸임)에 당선됐다. 예산 출신으로 명지대학교 졸업 후 중, 고등학교 체육교사 자격증을 취득한 그는 국기원 7단으로 제57회 전국체육대회 일반부에서 페더급 1위를 차지했고, 1976년부터 제10회, 11회, 12회 대통령하사기 쟁탈전에서 3연패의 기록을 세운 태권도선수 출신이다. ROTC 18기 기갑 장교로 군 복무를 마치고 1985년 멕시코 태권도 국가대표 코치로 재직 후 1988년 미국으로 향해 미국 유니버시아드 대표팀 코치로 활동했으며 현재 미국 내에서 국기인 태권도를 미국사회에 보급하는데 크게 기여했다. 이 부시장은 그동안 상공회의소 부회장과 뉴저지주 한인회 부회장 등을 역임했으며, 2009년 팰팍시의회 보궐선거에서 시의원으로 당선된 이후 현재까지 5선 의원(시의장)으로 재임하고 있다. 이 부시장은 또 의정활동을 통해 한국어가 팰팍시 제2외국어로 선정되는데 일조했으며, 유학생 및 교민의 안정적인 정착을 위한 멘토링 및 상담활동을 펼치고
